Eczema is a chronic skin condition that tends to flare up periodically. There are many different types of eczema, but the most common form is known as atopic dermatitis. Atopic means that it is related to allergies, including hay fever, and asthma.

You may experience some or all the listed symptoms, as eczema varies from person to person. It may also manifest differently according to the age of the sufferer. Younger children and babies tend to develop eczema on their elbows, knees, face, and scalp. However, older children and adults usually have eczema on feet, the back of their knees, hands, and/or arms.
Eczema itself is not a result of anything the sufferer has or has not done, but certain environments and activities could result in a flare-up of the condition. It is usually a result of a genetic mutation (filaggrin). This affects the skin’s ability to protect itself from allergens and irritants. Without the usual moisture retention and protection from external substances, people are at higher risk of developing allergies related to skin contact, infections, sensitivity to skincare products, itchiness, and skin soreness.

Hand eczema treatment usually requires stronger steroids than other types of eczema because the skin on our palms is thicker than elsewhere on the body. In this case, we may use more potent steroids, but possibly for a shorter time than usual.
We may also recommend that you wear gloves to protect the skin of your hands from allergens and irritants, such as peeling fruit and vegetables or performing tasks that require your hands to be wet. It is essential to keep the inside of the gloves dry, so do not wear them if your hands begin to sweat. This, in addition to a good skincare regimen including barrier creams, can provide effective protection and prevent flare-ups.
It is very important that your hands stay dry if you have hand eczema, so always dry them thoroughly, removing your rings if possible.
When eczema affects the face, it can be particularly distressing because of the sensitivity of the skin there. It can be particularly sore, and may result in redness, dryness, flakes, cracked skin, soreness, bumps, and blisters. Facial eczema is common around the eyes and on the eyelids, particularly in adults. This can lead to serious eye problems, so prompt eczema face treatment is recommended.
Gentle cleansers, fragrance-free skin hydration creams or ointments can help. Avoiding sunlight can also help control your symptoms. Facial eczema treatment might involve short-term and careful use of a topical corticosteroid. Topical calcineurin inhibitors are easier to use, and we may also try phototherapy to reduce itching and irritation and boost the immune response.
Eczema of the scalp can cause itchy, red, inflamed skin and may lead to dandruff and tell-tale white flakes. It affects about 5 percent of the population, and those most prone to the skin condition may have immune system issues, other skin conditions, allergies, or other types of eczema.
Because of the positioning, it is most often treated with a shampoo or gel applied to the scalp. Corticosteroids (used in the short-term) and coal tar delivery systems can also calm irritation and prevent flaking. If the case is severe, scalp eczema treatment can include oral anti-fungal medication.
